The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team opened its season with a third place finish this weekend.
Los Alamos grabbed 43 points to take third place at the Carlsbad Invitational tournament this weekend, good enough for third place at the 8-team tournament. At the same tournament, the Hilltopper boys finished sixth with 13 points.
The host Carlsbad Cavemen earned wins in both the boys and girls sides. Los Alamos' boys had their three-year winning streak snapped this weekend.
Individually, Los Alamos' No. 6 girl, Gwynn Cunningham swept Goddard's Angelica Sanchez to win that bracket. Cunningham held on in the first set to win 7-5 and then put the match away with a 6-3 win in the second set.
In doubles, the girls No. 2 team of Susanna Lucido/Colleen Fitzsimmons was also victorious.
