For this weekend, at least, Española Valley will be located at Taos’ Quail Ridge Inn.
Los Alamos’ tennis teams will take part in the Española Valley Quadrangular this weekend which will be held in Taos. Competition starts at 3:30 p.m. Friday and continues through Saturday, although the schedule is dependent on the weather, the forecast of which is dicey.
This meet is of interest for the Hilltopper girls, as they are scheduled to face the Farmington Scorpions Friday. Farmington, the team Los Alamos was most concerned with at the state team championship meet last year, is again among the most dangerous Class AAAA squads this year.
The two teams met in the state AAAA team finals and the Scorpions were neck-and-neck with the Hilltoppers throughout the six singles matches, although the tightest of those matches all went the way of the Hilltoppers.
Los Alamos’ No. 3 doubles team of Emma Myers and Desta Shelley’s win over Farmington’s No. 3 team sealed the state title for Los Alamos.
Farmington’s top singles player, Kamy Blackwood, and last season’s No. 3 single, Tori Merrion, are both back for 2009.
The Hilltopper boys, meanwhile, will also face a formidable Scorpions’ team.
The Scorpions, who won their home invitational last weekend, have several key returners this season back from their 2008 squad that met up with the Hilltoppers in the team semifinals, including seniors Adam Ashworth and James Laravee.
Los Alamos’ boys have gotten off to a promising start in the 2009 season. In their most recent outing, two weeks ago, Los Alamos took top honors at the Carlsbad Invitational.
At Carlsbad, Los Alamos finished with 22 points to hold off second-place Lovington, which finished with 17. Its No. 2 doubles team of Stephen Townsley/Chase Havemann and No. 3 doubles team of Ben Havemann/Dominic Lucido both won their competitions at the tournament.
Los Alamos’ girls finished second at Carlsbad with its No. 3 doubles team of Gillian Hsieh-Ratliff/Madeline Margevicius taking first place.
