The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team dismantled its opponents at Saturday’s Farmington Invitational, although head coach Bruce Cottrell is quick to add a caveat.
Los Alamos dropped just two matches in three duals, pounding Piedra Vista, Belen and the host Farmington Scorpions.
If the ’Topper girls can take care of business at Friday’s and Saturday’s District 2AAAA tournament, they will have an excellent argument for the top seed at the Class AAAA team tournament.
However, Cottrell considers the Scorpions a threat to his team’s chances for a second straight AAAA title and Cottrell was quick to point out that the Scorpions were missing three of their top six singles players due to illness this weekend.
The three dual sweep bumped up the Hilltoppers’ record to 13-2 on the season. They haven’t lost to a Class AAAA team in 2008.
Los Alamos’ boys, meanwhile, dropped just one match in their three duals meets, that coming via an injury default at No. 2 doubles with the Hilltoppers’ Stephen Townsley/Daniel Trugman up 4-2 in the first set against Fernando Charley/Cory Burns of Piedra Vista. Trugman suffered an ankle injury in the match.
With those three wins, Los Alamos moved to 11-2 on the season heading into the district tournament.
