Members of the Los Alamos Tennis Club will once again slug it out for this year’s championship.
LATC will host its championship tournament Saturday and Sunday at Urban Park. Several titles will be up for grabs, including the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
The top performer from the 2012 championship was David Lee. Lee earned the men’s A title last year over Bill Vigil, then he and partner Bob Tonelli advanced to the men’s doubles championship match before falling to Vigil/Ryan Maupin.
Lee went up 4-2 in the first set of the men’s singles championship before Vigil retired due to a muscle injury. Vigil/Maupin topped Lee/Tonelli in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to claim that title.
Because of low turnout in 2012, there was no separate women’s singles or women’s doubles titles awarded. One of the few women in the tournament, Claire White, entered into the men’s draw.
The last woman to win the LATC singles title was Jeena Kim in 2011. Kim won in a round-robin format.
Other winners from last year included Grigory Ovanesyan, who topped Sidra Hsieh-Ratliff in mixed B singles, Gilbert Ratliff/Linda Hsieh in mixed A doubles and Ovanesyan/Christopher Lee in mixed B doubles.
Also last year, John Parker won the 50-and-over singles flight.
