Twirl Toy Store and Playspace in Taos has been named by CNN as one of the “15 Best Spots for Kids” in America. Twirl is in good company, alongside the country’s top kid-friendly attractions such as Legoland (Calif.), Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Fla.) and American Museum of Natural History (N.Y.), among others.
The selections stem from Gogobot Traveler’s Favorites awards, which is based on user recommendations and the number of visits by the site’s 3.7 million users. The list includes only those kids friendly attractions which were also fun for adults.
“We’re thrilled to be recognized as a best spot among such an impressive list of contenders. We get a lot of visitors from all over the world who tell us they think we’re the coolest toy store they’re ever visited; so it’s nice to think they’ve gone back home and spread the word,” said Twirl co-director Nikki Ross. “We’re always looking at ways in which we can evolve and improve on what we do. For a small town, Taos is rich with creative talent we can draw on like local mom and super welder Christina Sparrong who designed our interactive gate. We also derive inspiration during trade show trips to New York and San Francisco and some of the names on the list are places we visit to get inspired so it’s incredible to be counted among them.”
Ross said that Twirl is attractive to adults, as well as children because of the building’s history and artwork surrounded by a sense of mystical magic, and the fact that adults can relax in the courtyard while their children enjoy the outdoor playground.
The 150-year-old building in which Twirl is housed is historic — once an art gallery for the late actor Dennis Hopper and his brother in the 1960s and a painting studio for internationally acclaimed artist Agnes Martin, among other owners.
The building is filled with artistic treasures including a secret staircase with dragons and snakes, Ali Baba fireplace, fish pond and wishing well.
In addition to the play space and toy store, Twirl offers crafting opportunities, classes and special events throughout the year, all at no charge. Twirl is celebrating its 7th year with a free birthday bash from 1-3 p.m. Saturday.
