As featured in Yahoo! Travel, Taos was selected by Travel and Leisure magazine as one of their top 10 picks for “America’s Coolest Desert Towns” (April 2014).
The list of small towns such as Taos were chosen by the travel magazine because they are “reshaping the American West with cutting edge art and great outdoor adventures.”
The article, written by Nicholas DeRenzo, said of Taos:
“Postcard-perfect Taos has always been a muse for artists who began arriving at this historic desert town, a 56 mile drive north of Santa Fe, as early as the 1890s. Luminaries like Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams immortalized the city’s colorful citizens, striking adobe architecture, and surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains in their works. Icons like the 18th-century San Francisco de Assisi Mission Church and especially Taos Pueblo remain favorite spots for visitors today — unlike other UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this millennium-old adobe apartment block of sorts is still a living, breathing community, where you can visit the galleries and workshops of native artisans.”
The complete list includes: Virginia City, Nevada; Bend, Ore.; Winslow, Ariz.; Marfa, Texas; Grand Junction, Colo.; Silver City, NM; Moab, Utah; Yakima, Wash.; Borrego Springs, Calif.; Terlingua, Texas; St. George, Utah; Palm Springs, Calif.; and Tubac, Ariz.
In April 2014 alone, Taos has been named as one of the “15 Best Spots for Kids” (CNN); one of America’s “Unusual Places to Stay in the USA” (Lonely Planet); “America’s Best Spring Drives” (New Haven Register); and “Top 10 Mountain Towns in America” (World Property Channel).
