At the upcoming Los Alamos Community Winds concert, two seasoned performers will be featured as soloists – and they haven’t even graduated from high school.
Adam Nekimken, trombonist, and Kathy Lin, pianist, will each perform a solo piece during the concert, which will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the White Rock Baptist Church.
Nekimken, a junior at Los Alamos High School, will perform the first movement of “Prlude et Divertissement” by Robert Clerisse. Nekimken said he has played with LACW since 2003. He explained his music instructor, Ted Vives, is also the director of the community winds and invited Nekimken to join. “And I’ve enjoyed it ever since,” Nekimken said. “(I) just enjoy playing music and having a lot of fun. It’s a really high caliber group, especially for a community (ensemble).”
The experience has taught him to play better in other large ensembles and exposed him to high caliber music, Nekimken said.
In addition to the LACW concert, Nekimken will display his musical abilities on another stage: May 25, he will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Nekimken will represent Los Alamos in the National Collegiate Wind Ensemble. The conductor will be H. Robert Reynolds.
