Take a trip through the jungle into the heart of reading

Last year, the elementary schools took a literary road trip; this year their reading excursion will lead school staff and students into the jungle.

Aspen Elementary School will begin its safari trek today with the Scholastic Book Fair running from 3:15-4 p.m.

The fair will continue from 8-8:30 a.m. and then again from 3:15-4 p.m. daily through Sept. 24.

Another opportunity to participate in the fair will be from 11:30-1:30 p.m. Sept. 23 during the Aspen’s Parent Teacher Organization’s (PTO) Family Picnic Event.

Aspen Librarian Kristine Bennett said the PTO was “very responsive” with scheduling the picnic to help promote the book fair.

Additionally, parents have also volunteered their time during the fair. It is the collaboration that makes the book fair successful, Bennett said.

Although the total amount of money raised during last year’s fair has not been released yet, Bennett said, “we did pretty well.”

The money raised through the book fair goes toward more than just purchasing books. The PTO uses the money to write checks to each of the teachers for classroom materials not covered by the school. This year the organization is interested in purchasing more playground equipment with the book sale revenue.
