By The Staff

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming teams opened their 2011-12 seasons Saturday with third-place finishes at the Barney Relays.
The Barney Relays, hosted by Albuquerque Academy, include the top-finishing teams in the state from the previous season’s state championship meet. Teams compete in relay events, many of which aren’t seen in any other competitions for the rest of the year.
The Hilltopper girls finished with 88 points for their third-place finish, while the Hilltopper boys had 96 points overall.
Academy, which won both the boys and girls state titles in 2010-11, were the big winners on both the boys and girls sides Saturday.
Individually, Hilltopper Maria Venneri earned Los Alamos’ first state qualification time of the season with her 100 backstroke time in the 400-yard medley relay, leading off the team of Molly Finn, Ashlynn Bennett and Justine Yang, which swam to a second-place finish in that event.
Also, the Hilltopper 400 freestyle relay team of Bennett, Venneri, Yang and Jessie Zhao earned a state qualification time, finishing in 4:01.42.
The boys 400 freestyle relay team of Nick Greenfield, Max Reidys, Trey Pereya and Connor Schultz had the team’s best finish of the day, finishing second.
Los Alamos will next be at home Dec. 2-3.
