ALBUQUERQUE — All in all, just about everything’s going according to plan.Several swimmers from Los Alamos turned in season- and career-best performances at Saturday’s Albuquerque Academy Invitational as the Hilltopper girls took second place in team standings and the Hilltopper boys grabbed third overall. In Saturday’s meet, held at the Natatorium on the Academy campus, Los Alamos’ girls won three events including the finale, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Hilltopper boys took five top-five finishes, highlighted by Alexander Baker’s second-place in the 100 butterfly.Los Alamos’ girls established their dominance early in the meet. Through just four events they collected a whopping 283.5 points, 31.5 points better than the host Chargers. However, some key absences hurt the team, not the least of which were swimmer Lydia Wermer and diver Lauren Bucklin, which cost Los Alamos some points which may have made a big difference.Academy would go on to win the both the boys and girls team competition. Academy finished with 740 team points to Los Alamos’ 683.In boys competition, Academy finished with 960.5 points. Los Alamos had 531 points, behind Rio Rancho’s 671.Additionally, Los Alamos picked up qualifying times for the state title meet in several events.
