Swimming and diving: LA girls take 2nd at Academy meet

Albuquerque Academy dominated both sides of its quadrangular swimming and diving meet Wednesday afternoon, which included the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls teams.

The Hilltopper girls finished second behind the host Chargers, picking up 93 team points. The Hilltopper boys, meanwhile, picked up 44 points to take third place behind Academy and Cibola.

Los Alamos, which is trying this week to give some of its athletes a bit of a breather — it has three events scheduled in seven days — only took a handful of swimmers to Wednesday’s meet. Los Alamos’ boys squad didn’t take enough swimmers to fill all of the scheduled events, so it wasn’t expecting a huge team showing.

“We took a small team, but the kids that went did really well,” Hilltopper co-head coach Rusty Bernstein said.

Individually for the Hilltopper boys, Chris Calhoun picked up his first state meet qualification time Wednesday, making the cut in the 500-yard freestyle. Calhoun’s time of 5:26.34 was good enough to earn him his first career trip to the state meet.

Calhoun picked up one of six new state cut times Wednesday. Other swims making the cut at Academy included Jennifer Barich-Mooday’s 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke efforts, Maggie Schapell in the 50 freestyle, Victoria Maqueda in the 100 freestyle and Lauren Castro in the 100 breaststroke.

Schappell had one of her best outings of the season, winning the 100 freestyle and helping the 200 freestyle relay team to a solid second place finish.

Alex Baker, who has been swimming as well as anyone on the Hilltopper boys’ team this month, earned a win in the 500 freestyle and a second place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Academy, which swam some of its top swimmers in their best events and sat others out of their best events Wednesday, is looking more and more like the team to beat in both the boys and girls state competitions.

“They have lots of depth,” Bernstein said. “They’re going to be tough. They’re probably favored going into the state meet to win right now.”

Making things tougher for the Hilltopper boys against the Charger boys is the fact that the Chargers boast some of the top male divers in the state while the Hilltoppers don’t field a single male diver.

In girls diving, Lauren Bucklin was fourth overall with her score of 135.50.

The final meet of this tough weeklong stretch for Los Alamos will be Saturday when it heads to the Santa Fe Prep Invitational, which will be held at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.

Several teams from the southern part of the state, most notably Hobbs, Carlsbad and Alamogordo, are scheduled to take part Saturday. Most seasons, it’s rare that Los Alamos sees many of the southern teams before the state meet.
