Swimming and diving: LA girls, boys swim to win at home

-A A +A

Although it’s barely two meets into the 2007-08 season, the Los Alamos Hilltopper swimming and diving clubs already have a lot to be excited about. The Los Alamos boys and girls squads earned solid victories Saturday at the Los Alamos Open, held at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center.More importantly, the Hilltopper boys grabbed seven qualifying marks for February’s state championship meet, and the ’Topper girls swam away with 13 marks.Los Alamos started out at Saturday’s meet very well, but Hilltopper head coach Bev Leasure noticed many of her athletes started to wane as the day went on.“Near the end they tired,” she said. “It showed. They swam well up front, but then they tired.”It wasn’t anything that some extra training won’t cure, however. Leasure said the team will do some heavy conditioning during the upcoming winter break, a time the team refers to as “hell week.”But it was hard to argue with the results at the open, with nine girls teams in contention and eight boys teams.Among the state qualifiers on the girls side were Lydia Wermer, Kara Leasure, Sammi Kao, Natalia Moore, Alexandra Hamada and Alisa Romero. Lisa Ann Hendricks also punched her ticket to state in the diving competition. For the Hilltopper boys, Micah Putnam, Dylan Lake and Alex Baker all picked up state qualifying times.“This is my first ever state qualifying time,” Baker said after his 59.49 posting in the 100-yard backstroke. “It feels really good. I felt like this would be a good meet for the team, and for me individually.”Baker shaved more than a second and a half off his previous best time in the race.Even for those who didn’t post state qualifying times, Leasure said there were some dramatic drops in times from some swimmers’ previous bests, which bodes even better for the squad in the coming weeks.Romero, who swam an impressive 1:08.00 in the 100 backstroke, likes the girls chances for a state title.“We really have a big shot at state,” she said. “We’re giving it everything we have to contribute to our team.”Romero gave a lot of credit to Kara Leasure, whom she’s been working closely with this season.“It’s definitely nice to be a freshman and have everyone help me,” Romero said. “I’m not training at the same level as (Kara) at all, but I’m trying to pace myself and work up to her level.”Leasure, for her part Saturday outdueled Audrie Tracie of Farmington in both the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Leasure’s combined margin of victory in those events — she qualified for state in both — was less than a second.Kao and Wermer were also multi-race qualifiers for the Hilltopper girls, with Kao picking up cut times in the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke, while Wermer made the cut in both the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. On the boys side, Lake knocked off .81 seconds from his previous best to earn a spot in the 100 breaststroke. Putnam easily eclipsed the state qualifying mark in the 200 IM to earn a trip back to the state meet.Los Alamos, which was in action for the first time since Nov. 17, will have another layoff until Dec. 22, when it heads to the Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational.
