In one of the larger meets of its 2008-09 season and with an abbreviated roster, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swim teams still had enough to earn solid showings.
Los Alamos’ girls finished fifth at Saturday’s Griffin Invitational, hosted by Santa Fe Prep and held at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center, while the Hilltopper boys took third place.
In all, 24 teams were scheduled to participate in Saturday’s meet. Full team scores weren’t available as of press time.
Saturday’s meet was the third event in seven days for the Hilltoppers. Head coaches Rusty Bernstein and Cindy Black gave their athletes the option of swimming in either or both — or for a few swimmers who had other extracurricular activities happening this week, none — of the teams’ meets this week.
Los Alamos’ girls placed second at the Albuquerque Academy Quadrangular, which was held Wednesday, while the boys finished third.
For the Los Alamos boys at Saturday’s meet, Hilltopper junior Ace Ventura picked up his first career qualifying time for the state championship meet, that coming in the 500-yard freestyle. Ventura’s time of 5:26.71 was good enough for third place in the event and was well under the state qualifying mark of 5:29.09.
