Superdelegates give no thought to people’s vote

What ever happened to the will of the people?

When did that go away?

Well, it seems to have for New Mexico’s Democratic leaders as more and more of the state’s Democratic superdelegates are announcing support for Barack Obama’s presidential bid.

Last time we looked, Hillary Clinton won the vote in the primary held here. What happened to that? How can the vote of the people be ignored so easily?

Yes, yes, we know that superdelegates can vote any way they feel like. But still, should not some weight – or thought – be given to how the people voted?

Or are we going back the old days of the smoke-filled rooms filled with big shots making decisions?

The latest state superdelegate decision leaves Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., as New Mexico’s only uncommitted superdelegate. In recent weeks, Sen. Jeff Bingaman and state Democratic Chairman Brian Colon joined Gov. Bill Richardson in endorsing Obama.

Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez are among the New Mexico superdelegates who are supporting Clinton.

Superdelegates are party and elected officials who will automatically attend the national convention and can support whomever they choose, regardless of what happens in the primaries and caucuses.

And they can vote as they will. But still, it smacks of elitism.
