Seeing family during the holidays turned into an opportunity to host a concert for pianist Roy Dunlap.
Dunlap, who resides in New York, will be visiting his sister Piper Wohlbier and her husband, John, in Los Alamos this week; additionally, he will be performing a concert, “An Evening of Jazz,” at 7 p.m. Sunday at Fuller Lodge.
The program, Dunlap explained, will mostly be holiday tunes, including music from the “Nutcracker Suite” along with some traditional holiday music.
“I’m looking forward to putting on a show for people,” he said. “I have heard Los Alamos has a nice art community and it’s something I wanted to do since my sister starting living … in Los Alamos.”
Dunlap said he invites people to come and enjoy the concert, which he describes as “light-hearted” and “fun.”
Performing and playing the piano is something in which Dunlap is a very experienced in. He said he has been playing professionally since age 14. He started in Wisconsin before moving to Florida to attend college. While at school, Dunlap said he performed with jazz groups before moving to New York in 2000.
He had been featured on many records and has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. In February, Dunlap will release his second album.
While he started his professional program at a young age, his interest in music started much earlier.
“I fell in love with playing the piano when I was 5,” Dunlap said. “I was always performing (and) playing.’
He added he enjoys jazz music because “I love the spontaneity of the moment. The music has a fun, lively energy and you never know what’s going to happen.”
Plus, there is a lot of room for creative freedom, he said.
His lengthy experience in music has really influenced, him, Dunlap said.
“I think as you grow and mature and learn more, you have more experiences to draw from and have a deeper understanding of music,” he said.
“(You) just have more experiences to draw from (and) include into … that performance,” he added.
There is a $15 suggested donation for Sunday’s concert. To find out more about Dunlap, go to www.roydunlap.com.
