Monica’s > Salon boasts boutique to offer clients more than a haircut

By Gina Velasquez

For a little bit of glitz and bling or to get a new look, Monica’s Accessories Boutique is available to make that happen.

Monica’s is not just a typical hair salon. Owner Monica Duran incorporates a wide array of boutique clothing, as well as jewelry, handbags, cosmetics and hair products.

The lifelong resident of Los Alamos has been in business at the current location for 17 years and three years ago she remodeled the shop and added the boutique to offer her clients something more.

“I love doing what I do,” Duran said. “Hair comes first and the rest is for my clients while they are here.”

Duran and Sylvia Salazar, a cosmetologist, have worked together for the last eight years.

Although she says the location is “hidden” at 1460 Trinity Drive, Suite 9, Duran said she has no shortage of customers.

“My clients know where I am and really support what is going on here,” she said. “I’ve been doing hair for lots of years and I have done very well.”

The shop is a full service salon.

Duran got the idea of adding the boutique from clients who would travel and buy things at boutiques in other parts of the country.

“I wanted that for the business,” she said. “Clients said they are asked ‘where did you get that cute handbag?’ etc. and they can say they got it here.”

She works with many different wholesalers to supply her products and attire.

Duran has gift certificates available and has different sales, including lunch-time sales for people who are out to get a haircut or shop during their lunch break. If a group of people come in at the same time, Duran is likely to offer a “flash deal” with a certain percent off. She offers specials every week.

Duran caters to all types of clients, although the apparel appeals to women. Men and kids are also welcome. Men can shop at the boutique for gifts for a loved one, particularly for Valentine’s Day.

To keep clients interested, Duran sometimes offers $5 Glam Bucks — or Boutique Bucks, which are given when a purchase is made at the shop. “People love to get good deals,” she said.

The salon is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call 662-2100 to make an appointment and for a price list for various services.

Appointments are required for large events such as prom, homecoming and weddings. Advance notice for these types of events is appreciated.
