Students to represent Los Alamos at division competition

The Music Teachers National Associations Six State Southwest Divisional Competition judges may be evaluating the musical talents of Peter Song, Kathy Lin and Angela Helm, but Los Alamos will be first to enjoy the students’ music.The public is invited to attend a recital given by Song, Lin and Helm at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fuller Lodge.These musicians were chosen through an audition to be the representatives for New Mexico at the Music Teachers National Associations Six State Southwest Divisional Competition to be held Jan. 19-20 in Las Cruces. Song, Lin and Helm will compete against students representing Hawaii, California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. The first place winner of each level will proceed to the MTNA National Competition to be held in Denver in March.During the recital Sunday, the students will premiere the programs they will be taking to Las Cruces. Competing in the piano junior division will be Song. He will perform “Ten Variations on La Stressa, La stressissima” in B Flat Major by Beethoven, “Rondo, Op. 59” by Kabalevsky, and “Polonaise, Op. 26, No. 1” by Chopin. Lin, competing in the senior piano division, will play “Prelude and Fugue in C minor” from the “WTC II” by Bach, “Impromptu Op. 142, No. 3” by Schubert, “Three Tone-Pictures, Op. 5” by Griffes, “Diabolic Suggestion Op. 4, #4” by Prokofiev, and the Beethoven “Concerto #1 in C Major.” Helm, competing in senior strings, will perform “Allemande and Sarabande” from Bach’s “Partita II in D Minor,” Mozart’s “Concerto No. 2,” and Bloch’s “Nigun.” Song and Lin are students of Lynn Lamb, and Helm is the student Marion Pack.The three musicians have been successful competitors in the past. They won the state convention of the Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico, which was held in November in Farmington. Afterward, Song, Lin and Helm represented New Mexico in the Regional Performance Auditions in January. Lin, 15, is a sophomore at Los Alamos High School. She has studied piano for nine years.This is her fifth time competing in the MTNA auditions and she will be competing for the second time at the regional competition.She has also competed in the Young Artist Competition in Piano Performance sponsored by the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, being first alternate last spring. She has attended the International Institute for Young Musicians in Kansas the last two summers.Helm, 18, is a senior at LAHS. She began studying violin at age 4.This is Helm’s third time competing in the MTNA Performance Auditions but her first time at the regional auditions. Besides playing in the LAHS Symphonic Orchestra and All-State, Helm has studied in the Summer BYU String Music Camp. She has played with the Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra for the past three years, and is currently the student representative on the Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra board.Helm is also a member of a string quartet coached by Pro Musica.Song, 14, is a freshman at LAHS and has studied with Lamb for nearly six years. This is his second time competing at the regional level, he performed last year in Salt Lake City.He was the second alternate in the Young Artist Competition in Piano Performance sponsored by NMSO in 2006.
