STORM WARNING: Winter's icy grip struggles to hang on even as Spring approaches

The National Weather Service issued the following advisory Friday morning:

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 6 PM MDT SATURDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBUQUERQUE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 6 PM MDT SATURDAY.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS... 3 TO 6 INCHES BELOW 7500 FEET AND 6 TO 10 INCHES ABOVE 7500 FEET.

* TIMING... RAIN AND SNOW WILL DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON AND CHANGE TO ALL SNOW BY EARLY THIS EVENING AND CONTINUE HEAVY AT TIMES INTO SATURDAY MORNING. SNOW WILL DIMINISH SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

* WINDS... NORTHWEST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH WILL DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON THEN BECOME EASTERLY THIS EVENING BEFORE DIMINISHING SATURDAY MORNING. THIS WILL CREATE AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOWFALL.

* SNOW LEVELS... PRECIPITATION WILL INITIALLY START OUT WITH A MIXTURE OF RAIN AND SNOW THIS AFTERNOON AND CHANGE TO ALL SNOW BY EARLY THIS EVENING..

* LOCAL IMPACTS... SNOW IS EXPECTED TO IMPACT TRAVEL DUE TO SNOW PACKED ROADWAYS AND REDUCED VISIBILITIES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS.

POTENT LATE WINTER STORM APPROACHING NEW MEXICO...

A STRONG UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM AND ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT WILL IMPACT NEW MEXICO TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY. PRECIPITATION WILL DEVELOP ALONG THE COLORADO BORDER LATE THIS MORNING... THEN SPREAD SOUTH AND INTENSIFY THROUGH LATE THIS AFTERNOON. BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES AND STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS WILL ACCOMPANY THIS STORM SYSTEM. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE EXPECTED WITH THE COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE ACROSS THE EASTERN PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING... CREATING AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOWFALL. IT STILL APPEARS THAT THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL WILL OCCUR ALONG THE EAST SLOPES OF THE SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS EASTWARD INTO THE NORTHEAST HIGHLANDS AND PLAINS... AND ALONG THE EAST SLOPES OF THE SANDIA MOUNTAINS EAST ACROSS THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS... GUADALUPE... QUAY AND DE BACA COUNTIES.
