State roundup: Aggie men’s hoops dropped by Wolfpack

RENO, Nev. — The New Mexico State University men’s basketball team’s three-game win streak was snapped with a 90-71 loss at Nevada Thursday.
Junior forward Troy Gillenwater had a game-high 22 points from the Aggies, while junior guard Hernst Laroche added 11 points.
 The Aggies moved to 10-10 and 4-2 in the Western Athletic Conference while the Wolf Pack improved to 6-13 and 3-3 in the WAC. Offensively, NMSU was strong in the first half with a 51.9 field goal percentage but hampered in the second half, held to a 30.3 percent clip.
 At halftime, the Aggies trailed the Wolf Pack, 43-36. Gillenwater led all scorers with 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the opening half.
 Nevada jumped to an early lead, 14-8, six minutes into the game. The Aggies responded and tied the game at 16-16 when Laroche hit a jumper from the left wing at the 12:05 mark.
 NMSU then claimed its first lead of the game, 18-16, after sophomore forward Tyrone Watson muscled in a jumper on the block. The Aggies maintained a two-point lead until Nevada went on an 8-0 run to take 28-22 advantage.
The Aggies began the second half strong and cut the Nevada lead to three, 45-42, on a fast break layup from Gillenwater at 17:44. The Wolf Pack scored the next five points and NMSU didn’t recover.
