Aggie softball clinches WAC title

LAS CRUCES – The New Mexico State University softball team made history Saturday after sweeping Boise State at the NMSU Softball Complex to claim the Aggies’ first outright Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular season championship.
The Aggies topped Boise State’s Broncos , 16-3 in five innings in the first game and 7-6 in game two.
NMSU (40-15, 17-4 WAC) won the league crown by two games over the Broncos (32-18, 15-6 WAC) while earning the top seed in the WAC Softball Tournament. The tournament will be played in Fresno, Calif., this week.
The Aggies will face the winner of the fourth-seeded Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine and the fifth-seeded Utah State Aggies Thursday.
The Aggies also matched a program-best victory total of 40 victories, first set in 1996, with the sweep of BSU. The Aggies’ 17 conference victories is also a new program record.
NMSU won 21 of its final 25 games down the stretch to end the regular season.
In the opener of Saturday’s twinbill, the Aggie scored a combined 13 runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to break open a 3-3 ballgame.
The Aggies pounded out 14 hits in the contest, including senior Ashley Maroda’s second homer of the weekend and a round tripper from junior Tiare Jennings.
In Saturday’s nightcap, NMSU went up 3-0 early in the first inning, but the Broncos rallied for four runs in the third and another in the fourth to pull ahead 5-3.

Lobo baseball team sweeps Air Force

ALBUQUERQUE – The University of New Mexico Lobos completed a conference series sweep with a 16-4 victory over the Air Force Falcons Sunday afternoon at Lobo Field.
This was the first and only game this season that UNM has played at Lobo Field and the Lobos made it count. The Lobos collected a big 19 hits, the most they have had in any game this season. The 16 runs matched a season high for the Lobos.
