Lobos fall in overtime to Santa Clara, 79-76
The University of New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball team dropped its tournament-opening game to Santa Clara in overtime Thursday.
The Lobos are competing in the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Following their 79-76 loss, they will face Washington State tonight in the tournament.
UNM came back after trailing much of the game to Santa Clara’s Broncos. UNM led only once in regulation, at 2-0, before the teams went back-and-forth in the OT period. Tony Snell, who finished with a team-high 18 points Thursday, hit a 3-pointer in overtime to give the Lobos a short-lived 70-69 lead.
Unfortunately for the Lobos, Snell fouled out in the overtime period. Meanwhile, the Broncos hit some key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
The loss dropped the Lobos to 2-2, the first time they’ve been at that mark through four games since the 2008-09 season.
Drew Gordon collected his second double-double Thursday, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Hugh Greenwood finished with 14. Kendall Williams, however, managed just six points and failed to connect on a field goal — in the team’s two losses, Williams is 0-for-13 from the floor.
Santa Clara’s Kevin Foster led all scorers with 26 points.
