Lobo men’s basketball reveals 2012-13 schedule
ALBUQUERQUE — University of New Mexico men’s head basketball coach Steve Alford has announced the 2012-13 schedule earlier this week and it includes 20 contests against teams that qualified for the NCAA tournament last season.
In all, the Lobos will play 31 games, 16 at home, plus two home exhibitions.
The Lobos’ non-conference schedule will see three top 100 RPI teams come to The Pit in Davidson (RPI 64) for the season opener, which is a part of ESPN’s 24 Hours of College Basketball. Also playing at The Pit this year are South Dakota State (RPI 42) and Valparaiso (RPI 95).
Davidson won the Southern Conference and went 25-8, losing to Louisville in the NCAA Tournament’s Second Round. South Dakota State was the Summit League champions at 27-8, and lost in the NCAA Tournament’s Second Round to Baylor in The Pit. Valpo was 22-12 and the regular season champions of the Horizon League.
Along with Davidson, two other non-conference home games will be on national television as UNM hosts USC Dec. 5 and WAC champions New Mexico State University Dec. 15.
“I’m very excited about our schedule. It’s a very demanding schedule with a number of difficult home games and some very challenging road games,” said Alford. “To get ESPN back in our building during the regular season to open up college basketball in the ESPN Marathon is very exciting for our program.”
This year, UNM will take part in The Paradise Jam, taking place in St. Thomas of the Virgin Islands.
The Lobos open the Jam with Illinois-Chicago Nov. 16, before facing off with either George Mason or Mercer, both 20+ game winners last year. The final day of the Jam, Nov. 19, will see UNM face off with either Wake Forest, Quinnipiac, Iona or UConn.
“We have some BCS schools on our schedule again, and our road trips are going to be extremely demanding with a game at Cincinnati that will be on ESPN2, and then concluding that trip at Saint Louis, two very good NCAA Tournament teams.”
Mountain West play begins with home games on Jan. 9 and Jan. 12 with UNLV and Fresno State.
Aggie volleyball starts season today
The New Mexico State University volleyball team opens the 2012 season with the Northern Illinois Tournament in DeKalb, Ill.
The Aggies play Wichita State this afternoon before facing North Dakota State and Northern Illinois Saturday.

After finishing last year with a 23-10 record, the Aggies were picked to win the WAC in the league preseason coaches poll. The Aggies return starting outside hitters Meredith Hays and Stephanie Ziegler, but lost three-time honorable mention All-American setter Jennah DeVries and three-time All-WAC selection middle hitter Kelsey Brennan.
Aggie head coach Mike Jordan, who is in his 15th season, said he is anxious to see what redshirt freshman outside hitter Bradley Nash can bring to the court after she went down with a season-ending injury in the first match of the 2011 season.
