Estrada wins golf title

LAS CRUCES — Alex Estrada of Belen held on to win this year’s New Mexico-West Texas Amateur championship at Red Hawk Golf Club.
Estrada went to a sudden-death playoff with Devin Miertschin of El Paso, Texas. In the playoff, Miertschin missed a 5-footer to give Estrada the title.
Estrada shot a three-day total of 217 to tie Miertschin after 54 holes and force the playoff.
The top finisher from Northern New Mexico was Marty Sanchez of Santa Fe. Sanchez finished with a three-day total of 230, which placed him tied for 15th.

Lobos offering family pack ticket special

ALBUQUERQUE — The University of New Mexico is offering a special for a season family four-pack of tickets.
This year, families can purchase season tickets for $120.
So far, UNM said it is more than halfway to its goal of selling 8,000 season tickets.
“Wells Fargo and Papa John’s Pizza coming on board this year to sponsor the Lobo football family pack is another great opportunity for our fans to attend our six home football games this year at University Stadium,” UNM associate athletic director Brad Hutchins said. “We have very affordable tickets with many different options and this is just another way for our great fans to support our Lobos.”
This first home game of the year for UNM, which is the debut of new coach Bob Davie, is Sept. 1 against Southern University.

Laroche signs pro contract

LAS CRUCES — Former New Mexico State University men’s basketball guard Hernst Laroche has signed a contract to play hoops for BC Odessa, Ukraine.
Laroche is originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was signed to a 1-year deal to play for Odessa in the Ukrainian SuperLeague.
During his career, Laroche became the NMSU all-time leader in games played (135), minutes played (4,417) and career steals (216). He also became the 29th member of the NMSU 1,000 point club in his senior year.
