Luczyszyn – Stanislava (Stella) Biss Luczyszyn, 95, of Welland, Ontario, Canada, passed away following surgery in the presence of her daughter on Feb. 22, 2008. She was born to the late John and Francis Biss August 3, 1912, in Ituna, Saskatchewan. She was the middle of five children and the oldest daughter. Her siblings, Joseph, Frank, Charles and Josephine all preceded her in death.
She attended the one-room schoolhouse in Ituna. On Nov. 3, 1929, she married the late Peter Luczyszyn. They lived together in Ituna, where they had three children, Myron, Joseph and Elizabeth. The family relocated to Welland in 1940. They enjoyed a large celebration for their 50th wedding anniversary in November 1979. Stella immensely enjoyed the company of family and friends. She was known by many as Babcia, grandmother in Polish. She liked to nourish her family with her cooking. Some of the family favorites were chicken noodle soup with homemade noodles, borscht, pierogis, cabbage rolls, bread, buns, cinnamon rolls and doughnuts. She laid out the most amazing feasts at Christmas Eve. Stella liked crocheting, knitting and sewing; her grandchildren often received gifts of slippers and scarves, and she even sewed outfits for her great-grandchildren. She had a love of music, and later in life taught herself to play the harmonica. She would entertain family after dinner with her music.Stella is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Scherer (Joseph) of Wilson, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, in 1996; her sons Myron (Shirley) in 1979, and Joseph (Delaphine) in 1985; and a granddaughter, Joanne Patricia Scherer, in 2001. She is survived by her grandchildren: Trevor Luchyshyn (Anne), Gary Luchyshyn (Carolyn), Linda Freisen (Alan), Susan Katch (Timothy), James Luchyshyn, Theresa Luchyshyn, Christine Brueske (Dierk) and Gregory Luchyshyn (Denise), all of the Welland area; Carolynn Scherer Katz (Joel) of Los Alamos, N.M.; Cathleen Keasey (Richard) of Gangelt, Germany; Lawrence Scherer of Lockport, N.Y. She also is survived by 21 great-grandchildren, including Ethan Katz of Santa Rosa, Calif., formerly of Los Alamos; plus Seth and Jonah Katz of Los Alamos, N.M.; and many nieces and nephews.Funeral arrangements are being handled by H. L. Cudney Funeral Home, Welland. Cremation has taken place. The celebration of the funeral mass is at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at St. Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church, 303 Niagara St., Welland, Ontario.In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Welland Hospital Foundation – Extended Care Unit, 65 Third St., Welland, ON L3B 4W6.
