Here is a summary of Saturday’s Los Alamos Hilltopper sports. More information on the Hilltoppers will appear later this week in the Monitor.
Girls basketball
At Griffith Gymnasium Saturday, the Hilltopper girls varsity basketball squad hung with the visiting Kirtland Central Broncos through three quarters, but the Broncos pulled away in the final period to win 50-39.
Los Alamos (4-4) led Kirtland Central 21-18 at the midway point of the second quarter and trailed by just a point at the break. Los Alamos would reclaim and keep the lead in the third quarter before an 8-2 run in the final 5:13 of the quarter put the Broncos up 35-32 heading into the final stanza.
In the fourth quarter, the ’Toppers managed just two field goals and turned the ball over six times as they tried to push the ball up the floor, something that the Broncos are more effective and experience at doing than the Hilltoppers.
“They tried to pressure us a little and that sped the tempo up,” Los Alamos head coach Gerry Washburn said after the game. “We’re not experienced enough to recognize that when that happens.”
