Cross country tryouts start Monday
Tryouts for the Los Alamos High School and Los Alamos Middle School cross country teams will start Monday.
Workouts will start at 3:30 p.m. daily. Monday through Thursday the teams will meet at LAHS’ Auxiliary Gymnasium and Friday at the baseball fields on North Mesa. LAHS and LAMS teams will work out together during the first week.
All workouts are mandatory for anyone interested in running cross country. However, students are encouraged to use the first week to find out if the LAHS or LAMS programs match their fitness and motivation levels.
Interested participations should wear proper running attire, including a watch with a chronograph, and bring a labeled water bottle and doctor-prescribed inhalers, if necessary.
All students must also have their completed paperwork and must have completed a physical examination.

Girls soccer program starts preseason Monday
Tryouts for the Los Alamos High School girls soccer program are scheduled to start Monday.
Tryouts will be held rom 4:30-7 p.m. Monday through Friday fat the Pueblo Complex. A short meeting is also scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday. All interested participants should attend that meeting and bring their necessary paperwork.
Prior to trying out, all players must have a physical examination on file with Los Alamos Public Schools. Additionally, all players must have proper equipment, including soccer shoes, shin guards and bring their own water.

LAMS football will start preseason Monday
Preseason practice for the Los Alamos Middle School football team will start Monday.
Interested seventh- and eighth-graders should bring all necessary paperwork and have their physical examinations done prior to the start of practice.
The first practice of the preseason is set for 3 p.m.
All athletes should arrive ready to practice in T-shirts and shorts and bring a water bottle.
Practices are scheduled from 3-5:10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8-11 a.m. Saturdays.

Golf course will host ‘Family Fun Nite’
Los Alamos Golf Course will have a Family Fun Nite Wednesday.
The event, for families with children younger than age 12, will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the golf course. The event includes a golf clinic, a 4-hole scramble and dinner. The course’ putting green will also be open during the event.
Interested families can sign up at the LAGC.
Price for the event is $30. Reservations should be made as soon as possible.

Kickboxing class offered at YMCA
The Family YMCA of Los Alamos is currently accepting registrations for its upcoming kickboxing class.
The class is held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30-9 p.m. Anyone aged 13 and older is welcome.
The class will focus on the basic techniques of punching, kicking striking and defense.
Price for participation is $53 for eight classes. YMCA members can enroll for no additional fee.

LA Triathlon is scheduled for Aug. 15
Registration for the 35th annual Los Alamos Triathlon is currently open.
Registration is being done online at www.active.com.
The triathlon, which is part of the Southwest Challenge Series, features a bike, swim, run format and will start at the Larry R. Walkup Center Aug. 15. Competition waves start at 7 a.m.
Price for participation is $50 per person, $90 for two-person teams and $120 for three-person teams.
Also, volunteers are being sought for the event in several areas. Organizers are seeking between 60-70 volunteers.

Registration for 2009 Kids Triathlon is open
Registration for the 16th annual Los Alamos Kids Triathlon is currently open.
The triathlon, which is sponsored by Los Alamos County, is a non-continuous event for youth 14 years of age or younger. Competition will be held in three age categories for both boys and girls.
The triathlon consists of a bike leg, running leg and swimming leg. Distances vary depending on the division. All contestants are required to use a bicycle helmet.
The event will start at 1 p.m. Aug. 16 at Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center.
Price for participation is $25 through Aug. 11 and $30 thereafter. Registrations may be made at active.com or at the aquatic center.
Los Alamos County is also seeking approximately 30 volunteers for the event.

Last Splash N Dash will be held Wednesday
The Triatomics Multisport Club and Los Alamos County Recreation Division will host its final Splash N Dash event of the summer Wednesday.
The Splash N Dash is designed to prepare individuals for the Los Alamos Triathlon, which will be held Aug. 15.
Participants of the Splash N Dash events will swim laps at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center and run a course along Canyon Road.
Registration will be held at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday. Pre-event meetings are scheduled for 6:55 p.m. and start times are set for 7 p.m.
The event is not a race, but is timed. Participation in Splash N Dash is free.
