Artesia, Aztec to meet for 4A football title
Two of the most powerful offenses in the state will face off for the Class AAAA football championship Saturday.
The Artesia Bulldogs, one of the most decorated teams in the history of New Mexico prep football, and the Aztec Tigers will meet in the state title game. Saturday afternoon’s game will be held in Artesia.
The Bulldogs went into the state AAAA playoffs as the fourth seed, but upset top-seeded Goddard, which had been ranked No. 1 in the state for much of the 2010 season, 38-29 last weekend to advance to the state title game. Goddard’s Rockets were the two-time defending state champions.
Aztec’s Tigers, meanwhile, held off the Belen Eagles last weekend in the Four Corners area. The Tigers, who defeated the Los Alamos Hilltoppers 52-0 in the second week of the regular season, were 38-33 winners over the Eagles. The Eagles finished as the AAAA runners-up behind Goddard in 2009.
This season, the Bulldogs (8-4) averaged 40,4 points during the regular season, while the Tigers were scoring at an impressive 47.6 points-per game clip. The two teams have combined for 196 points in four games during the 2010 playoffs.
Artesia has won four state titles since 2001, most recently in 2007, and has won or shared 25 state titles in its history. Aztec has reached the state title game three times since 2003.
Also Saturday, Mayfield will face Manzano in the Class 5A state title game and Albuquerque Academy will meet Lovington for the Class 3A title.
