Long course meet will be at aquatic center
The Larry R. Walkup Center will host the 2011 Long Course state swimming championship Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Approximately 400 swimmers are expected to take part in the event, including several swimmers from Los Alamos.
Preliminary events will start at 9 a.m. all days with finals set for 5 p.m. Thursday, 4 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

LAHS football workouts start Aug. 1
Mandatory workouts for the Los Alamos High School football program start Aug. 1 at the school’s practice field.
Participation in football is open for players in grades 9-12.
All physical examinations and paperwork must be completed and turned in before athletes are allowed to participate. Forms are available at the school’s athletics website, www.laschools.net/athletics/site/default.asp.
Those interested in playing for the 2011 season should plan to attend an equipment handout and paperwork check Monday (juniors and seniors) or Tuesday (freshmen and sophomores) in the LAHS weight room. Both meetings will be at 8 a.m. For more information, visit www.topperfootball.com.

Boys soccer tryouts begin Aug. 8
Tryouts for the Los Alamos High School boys soccer program will be held Aug. 8-12. Tryouts for the 2011 season will start at 8 a.m. each day.
All physical examinations and paperwork must be completed and turned in before athletes are allowed to participate. Forms are available at the school’s athletics website, www.laschools.net/athletics/site/default.asp.
Tryouts will run from 8-9:30 a.m. at North Mesa Field and 4-6:30 p.m. at Overlook Park. Participants will need running shoes, cleats, shin guards (afternoon session only) and water.

XC meeting is Aug. 3
A meeting for interested participants in the 2011 Los Alamos High School cross country program will take place Aug. 3 at LAHS’ Auxiliary Gymnasium, while season practice starts Aug. 8.
LAHS cross country participation is open to all boys and girls in grades 9-12.
For the Aug. 3 meeting, which starts at 6 p.m., coaches will conduct paperwork verification and an optional run will be held.

Also, assistant cross country coaches for LAHS’ developmental program are being sought the 2011 season.

Middle school football practice starts Aug. 8
Practice for the Los Alamos Middle School football program starts Aug. 8 at LAMS’ field.
Participation is open to seventh and eighth graders. All physical examinations and paperwork must be completed and turned in before athletes are allowed to participate.
Players should wear T-shirts and shorts and bring cleats and water to practice. Practice starts at 3 p.m.

Splash N Dash set for Wednesday
The next Splash N Dash will take place Wednesday starting at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center.
The Splash N Dash, a free event, is open to the public and is geared toward those training for the Los Alamos Triathlon. Registration for the event is limited to 75 participants.
Interested participants may sign up at the aquatic center on the day of the event starting at 6:20 p.m.

YMCA’s race rescheduled
The Family YMCA of Los Alamos has rescheduled its 2011 Firecracker 5K Fun Run for Aug. 6.
The 5K was originally scheduled to take place July 4. Race time is 8 a.m.
Day-of registration starts at 7:15 a.m.
