Girls soccer tryouts begin Aug. 12


Los Alamos High School’s girls soccer program will start its tryouts for the fall 2013 season Aug. 12.

Tryouts are open to any girl entering grades 8-12.

Players should meet Aug. 12 at Sullivan Field at 7 a.m. and have all necessary paperwork ready. Tryouts will be conducted at Sullivan Field and the Pueblo Complex.

All interested players must have soccer shoes, shin guards and bring their own water to each session.

Bowling league starts Aug. 20


The Tuesday Housewives Bowling League is welcoming new bowlers for its upcoming season.

The league opens its 52nd year of competition Aug. 20. Events are held at the Santa Claran bowling alley.

Those interested in taking part in this year’s play are asked to call 661-6163.


Golf tourney to benefit baseball, softball teams


The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball and softball programs will host their annual Diamonds In the Rough golf tournament Aug. 17 at Los Alamos Golf Course.

The scramble format tournament is a fundraising event to help offset costs for both teams. 

Price for participation is $80 per player. The fee includes cart, greens fees and post-tournament dinner. Prizes will be given for the top gross and net scores, as well as longest drive and closest shot to the pin.

Triathlon registration is open online


Registration for the 39th Los Alamos Triathlon is underway online.

The event, which consists of a 20K bike, 400-meter swim and 5K run, is scheduled for Aug. 17. The first wave is scheduled for 7 a.m.

Individuals or 2- or 3-person relay teams may register. Registrations are being taken at active.com or can be taken at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center.

Price for participation is $50 per individual, $90 for 2-person team and $120 for 3-person team. Online registration closes Aug. 14.

Volunteers are also being sought for the event for traffic control, packet pick-ups and other duties.

Final Splash N Dash is Wednesday


The Splash N Dash series, which is hosted by Triatomics Multisport Club, will have its final session Wednesday.

The series is designed for those interested in training for the Los Alamos Triathlon, which is scheduled for Aug. 17.

Participants can choose either a 400-yard swim and 5K run or 200-yard swim and 3K run. An additional shorter course is also available for youth participants. 

All Splash N Dash events start at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center.

Registration for each Splash N Dash is done about 30 minutes prior to the start at the aquatic center. There is no fee for participation but registration is limited.

Tourney will benefit Jr. Golf Boosters


The Los Alamos Junior Golf Boosters will host a fundraising tournament at Los Alamos Golf Course Saturday.

The tournament is a team quota format — players will have to reach a target score based on their handicap. 

Price for participation is $50, which doesn’t include greens fees or cart. All proceeds will benefit the Los Alamos Hilltopper and Los Alamos Junior Golf programs.

Entry deadline is Wednesday.

NMAA Foundation hosting fundraising run


The 2013 New Mexico Activities Association Foundation’s Fun Run is scheduled for Aug. 10 in Albuquerque.

The Fun Run, which will include a 5K run/walk and 1K kids fun run, will benefit the NMAA Foundation’s scholarship program.

The event will be at the Albuquerque Academy campus. The 5K race starts at 8 a.m.

Price for participation is $20 for the 5K, $12 for the 1K. Registration information can be found online at nmact.org.


Youth soccer referee clinics scheduled in Albuquerque


Three upcoming soccer referee clinics are being offered in Albuquerque for those interested in officiating locally.

Los Alamos Youth Soccer League requires Game 9 certification, which is being offered at these clinics. Clinics will not be held in Los Alamos this year but the Albuquerque clinics are scheduled for Thursday and for Sept. 1.

To register, interested participants can visit nmsra.ezregister.com on the Internet.

There will also be a 2014 recertification clinic scheduled for Aug. 10-11 for existing referees. More information on that clinic can be found by visiting nmsra.org.

County Rodeo returns to Brewer Arena


The Los Alamos County Rodeo, which is part of the County Fair schedule, will be Aug. 10-11 in Brewer Arena.

The rodeo is scheduled from 2-5 p.m. Saturday and 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Brewer Arena, located on North Mesa.

Baseball tryouts will be in Albuquerque


The Albuquerque Baseball Academy will host its Fall Tryout Showcase Aug. 10-11.

The event is open for all high school baseball players. Freshmen and sophomores will have tryouts Aug. 10 and juniors and seniors Aug. 11.
