Moutain bike race scheduled for Aug. 3 at Valles Caldera

Valles Caldera National Preserve will host the first PyroClassic cross-country mountain bike race Aug. 3.
All races will start and finish near the Valles Caldera Ranch Headquarters. Divisions for the race include Pro/Cat 1, Intermediate/Cat 2, and Beginners/Cat 3.
Top division racers will travel a total of 30 miles, intermediate racers 18 miles and beginning and Cat 3 racers 10 miles.
The course will go through the valley meadows and head up Rendondo Peak.
The race is being run under a USA Cycling race permit and is part of the New Mexico Off-Road Race Series.

Golf tournament will benefit local chapter of BBBS

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern New Mexico will host its third annual Drive For Matches golf tournament Saturday. The tournament will be at Los Alamos Golf Course.
The tournament, which is a best ball scramble, will start at 11 a.m.
Price for participation is $100 per individual, $400 for teams. The entry fee includes golf cart and post-tournament dinner.

Tryouts for club baseball team will be in Albuquerque

The Albuquerque Baseball Academy will hold fall tryouts Aug. 9-10. The tryouts will be at Lobo Field on the University of New Mexico campus
The Aug. 9 tryout will be for high school freshmen and sophomores, while the Aug. 10 tryout will be for juniors and seniors. Check-in for tryouts is 8:30 a.m. both days.
Players selected for the team will compete in several tournaments around the region, such as in Lubbock, Texas, Denver and Phoenix.

Wrestling clinic hosted by YMCA

The Family YMCA of Los Alamos is offering a wrestling skills clinic starting July 28.
The purpose of the course is to help youth participants develop wrestling fundamentals.
The clinic is for boys and girls ages 5-12. Wrestlers will be matched with other wrestlers who have similar abilities.
Price for participation is $40.

Baseball, softball hosting fundraising golf tourney

The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball and softball teams will host their Diamonds in the Rough golf tournament Aug. 16.
The tournament, which will be at Los Alamos Golf Course, is a scramble, blind-bogey format.
Price for participation is $80. The fee includes a cart, T-shirt and dinner.
Early entry deadline is Aug. 13.

Adult, kids triathlons returning

Registration is open for the 40th annual Los Alamos Triathlon.
The Triathlon, which features a 20-kilometer bike leg, a 400-meter swim leg and a 5K run, is scheduled for Aug. 16. The event is hosted by Los Alamos County.
The early registration deadline is Aug. 12 and late registration continues through Aug. 14. There is no race-day registration.
Price for participation is $50 for individuals, $90 for teams of two and $120 for teams of three.
Also, the county will host its 21st annual Kids Triathlon Aug. 17.
