Kirk, USA rout opponents at World University Games

Alex Kirk and the USA men’s World University Games basketball team will again be in action for a pool play game today.
The USA will take on Sweden in the third game of pool play. That game will be televised on ESPNU tonight and replayed early Thursday morning.
Kirk, who made the cut for the WUG, has appeared in both the USA’s pool play contests so far. He produced a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds) in 17 minutes in the USA’s 140-46 victory over the United Arab Emirates Sunday.
Monday, Kirk played seven minutes and ended up with 2 points and 4 rebounds as the USA thumped the Czech Republic 96-53.
Currently, the USA is a half-game behind Canada in Pool C. Canada is 3-0, with wins over Sweden, the UAE and Australia. Australia is a half-game behind the USA.
The first- and second-place team from each of the four pools will move on to direct elimination, which begins Sunday.
The WUG are being played in Kazan, Russia.

WR All-Stars advance to final

The White Rock Little League 9-10 All-Stars earned another big victory Tuesday to move to the final round of the District 1 tournament.
White Rock routed Española 16-4 in the semifinal round of the tournament, going on at Alto Park in Santa Fe. It was the second 16-4 win for White Rock, which topped Los Alamos’ All-Stars by the same score Saturday.
White Rock will play for the District 1 title Thursday at Alto Park. That game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The White Rock All-Stars include Logan Capon, Taylor Drake, James Hollon, Turner Keith, Jaxson Martines, Lucas Martinez, Cade Pimentel, Ty Swavely, Ron Terp, Caden Thornton, Rhett Van Tiem, Tyler Weiss and Cal Wimer. The team is managed by Dave Swavely and coached by Randy Drake and Paul Terp.
