Pace Race season opens


The 2014 Pace Race season opens Tuesday evening.

The Pace Race, a weekly event that is held every Tuesday during the spring, summer and extending into the fall, returns for another season with Tuesday’s opening race.

The first race will be at 6 p.m. The race starts at the Canyon Rim trailhead, which runs parallel to N.M. 502 near the entrance to Entrada Park.

Pace Races are hosted by the Atomic City Roadrunners, a local running club, although anyone interested in taking part may do so.

Weekly races start at various sites around Los Alamos County. All races are at 6 p.m.

LA girls win two in day one of Rio Rancho tourney


The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team picked up a pair of wins in a busy first day of a tournament in Rio Rancho.

Los Alamos, along with 31 other teams, took part in this weekend’s Rio Rancho tournament. Los Alamos had five scheduled games, three on Friday and two additional games on Saturday — the results of Saturday’s games weren’t available as of press time.

In its opener, the Hilltoppers lost to the Centennial Hawks 12-2.

But the Hilltoppers bounced back from that initial loss to upend Gadsden, a Class 5A school, 12-9, before pounding St. Michael’s 11-3.

Run For Her Life set for today

The fourth annual Run For Her Life is scheduled for this morning.

The Run For Her Life is a 5K and 10K race starting at East Park. Race time is 9 a.m.

Proceeds from the event are donated to charities in the area of breast cancer research.

Sr. Olympics registration is open

The Los Alamos Senior Olympic Games will be held locally starting April 11.

The local games run through May 13. A variety of different events are offered to participants.
To participate, entrants should be 50 years of age or older. Registration forms are available at the YMCA and will be accepted through Monday.

Slowpitch softball season gets going April 26

Registration is open for the upcoming slowpitch softball season.
The slowpitch league is for men’s and women’s teams. Games are played during the week at Overlook Park in White Rock.
The season starts April 26-27 with a tournament. The season runs through the end of July.
Price for participation is $575 per team. Registration fee and additional paperwork is due by April 18.
Additionally, a field work party is scheduled for April 12 at Overlook Park.
