LA boys fall in first round of tourney
The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team ended its season with a loss in the first round of the District 2-4A tournament.
Los Alamos fell to the Santa Fe Demons in the opening round, 72-37, to finish the 2012-13 season with a record of 1-26.
Santa Fe now advances to the quarterfinal round of the 2-4A tournament where it will face Española Valley. That game is scheduled for tonight at Edward Medina Gymnasium in Española.
The Hilltoppers’ only win of the year came Jan. 4 against Taos.
For the Demons (13-14 overall, 4-5 in 2-4A), who have some momentum following Monday’s win and a buzzer-beating victory over the Capital Jaguar Saturday night, Tres Chaires had 16 points and Elliot Nicholas added 11 points against the Hilltoppers.
Santa Fe beat Los Alamos in all three of their games this season by a combined 89 points.
Monday’s game was the final game in the careers of two Hilltopper seniors, Travis Richins and Derek Salazar.
Hilltopper girls face Capital tonight
The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team will take on the Capital Jaguars tonight at Griffith Gymnasium.
The Jaguars topped the Bernalillo Spartans Monday night in the first round of the District 2-4A tournament 42-39 over Bernalillo in Santa Fe.
Los Alamos (15-11) has won four its last five contests, including a 57-48 victory over Capital in its regular season finale Feb. 19. Los Alamos has beaten Capital (7-21) in all three of the teams’ meetings.
The winner of tonight’s game travels to Española Valley Thursday for the right to advance to Saturday’s district championship game at Santa Fe.
