Abeyta heads to nationals

Local youth track and field athlete Elena Abeyta is taking part in the National Junior Olympics Championships this week.

The Junior Olympics event is currently being run in Greensboro, N.C. and will continue through Sunday.

Abeyta, 10, placed in the top six in her age group in three events at the regional track and field meet held earlier this month in Provo, Utah. She finished second in the long jump, second in the 100 meters and sixth with her 400 relay team.

Both Elena and her sister Anna Abeyta, who was also on the regional 400 relay squad, attend Aspen Elementary School.

Local golfers compete in youth championship tourney

A trio of youth golfers from Los Alamos took part in the Sun Country PGA Junior Tour Championship earlier this month.

Thomas Herrera and Miranda Olinger both entered the 15-16 draw at the event, which was held at the Lone Star Golf Club in El Paso, Texas. Also at the event, Alicia Herrera entered the girls 17-18 draw.

In the boys 15-16 competition, Herrera shot an 82 for day one and an 81 for day two, tying him for 20th place overall.

Olinger, in the girls 15-16 division, had a day one 90. She improved her score by seven shots in day two to finish in sixth place overall.

Alicia Herrera, meanwhile, also improved her day-one total by seven shots, carding a 95 in her first round and an 88 in her second round. Herrera finished sixth in that competition.
