Sporting events remain on hold

Things are tenuous for the current schedule of sporting events due to the Las Conchas Fire and ensuing evacuation of the Hill.

This week’s Pace Race, which was scheduled for today, was canceled Monday night due to the fire. Also Monday, organizers of Los Alamos County’s slowpitch softball league had announced all games would be postponed.

The Family YMCA of Los Alamos said Tuesday it was closing all of its Los Alamos operations – including its main facility and the Teen Center – until further notice. Should the YMCA remain closed into next week, that could also effect the running of the Y’s Firecrakcer 5K, which is on July 4.

The YMCA did say its programs based in Española, including that teen center, would continue as scheduled.

This fire could also put a nix to the Atomic City Invitational that is scheduled for Friday at Los Alamos Golf Course.

The ACI, the oldest match-play tournament in the state, has been canceled just one other time since 1954, that coming in 2000 after the Cerro Grande Fire. The ACI, which was won in 2010 by top local women’s player Ev Griggs and Santa Fe’s Ashton Parker, who put on one of the most impressive runs in the tournament’s history, is traditionally played on or around Independence Day.

Last year, ACI directors made a player-recruiting push and the field for the tournament was bigger than it had been for several years previously.

The golf course, like most of Los Alamos County, was closed for operation Tuesday.

Should the fire or its effects continue for an extended period of time, it might also put a damper on the City Championship tournament, which will be played in late July.
