Spooky ... yet environmentally friendly

Think orange, but be green. Recycle Halloween jack-lanterns at the Pumpkin Glow. This year, the Seventh Annual Los Alamos Pumpkin Glow will take place from 6-9 p.m. Saturday on the Fuller Lodge lawn. The Pumpkin Glow is part of Halloweekend, a community event that also includes Trick or Treat on Mainstreet. The Los Alamos Arts Council thought it would be appropriate to have a recycling theme this year because the event occurs after Halloween, which is Friday.

“It’s a great way to showcase your pumpkin twice, once on Halloween and once at the Pumpkin Glow. Why not? One takes time to carve the pumpkin, it deserves to be shown off,” organizer Lisa Lloyd said.

To add to the “green” theme this year, the Pajarito Envrionmental Education Center will host the “Watt Swap” from 10 a.m. –1 p.m. Saturday at Fuller Lodge. Bring a pumpkin and an old light bulb and exchange it for a new compact fluorescent light bulb, which is a more energy efficient light source. In addition, all pumpkins at the Pumpkin Glow will be taken to the Los Alamos County Eco Station to be composted.

If interested in participating, bring carved pumpkins to the Fuller Lodge lawn any time before 3 p.m. Saturday. From basic jack-lantern faces to intricately carved designs, all carved pumpkins will be accepted.
