Just three days after a big win, the Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team was on the wrong end of a big loss.
The Hilltoppers were dropped by the Albuquerque Academy Chargers 11-1 on the road Saturday in a nondistrict contest. The loss came on the heels of a 21-1 victory by the Hilltoppers over the Taos Tigers to open their District 2AAAA season.
Los Alamos will look to bounce back in an important 2AAAA game Wednesday. It travels south to take on the Bernalillo Spartans in a big early district-season meeting between the two squads.
The Hilltoppers (5-8) and the Spartans (3-5) met March 21 in a nondistrict contest, with the Hilltoppers coming from behind in their final at-bat to win 6-5 in Los Alamos.
Los Alamos has evenly split its last six games, one of which was the win over Bernalillo. In its three wins during that stretch, Los Alamos has outscored its opponents 41-6, but in its three losses has been outscored 26-2.
For Academy, the win Saturday was its first of the season. It had lost its first 11 games before topping Los Alamos and only one of those losses had Academy stayed within four runs of its opponents, most of which were relatively unheralded.
Bernalillo was scheduled to open its District 2AAAA season Saturday against Capital in a doubleheader, but results of those games hadn’t been reported as of Monday night.
