The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team hung with a very good Moriarty Pintos’ squad Tuesday for six innings.
The seventh inning, not as much.
The Pintos exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh to break Tuesday’s game wide open at Overlook Park en route to a 13-3 victory.
Moriarty’s starting pitcher Morgan McWilliams hit a solo home run to lead-off the seventh Tuesday while the next five hitters following her reached base and came around in the inning.
After falling behind 2-0 after one inning and 3-0 after a pair, starting pitcher Monika Teter settled in and Los Alamos held Moriarty scoreless in the third and fourth innings. The Hilltoppers pushed two runs across in the fourth inning to get right back into the ballgame.
The Pintos (2-5), however, answered back in the visitor’s half of the fifth, scoring three times to take a 6-2 advantage late.
For Los Alamos (2-5), Tuesday’s game was the fourth time this season it has surrendered 11 runs or more.
It has lost every game where it has given up more than three runs.
In the fourth, lead-off hitter Brianna Radosevich reached on a walk to open the inning, as did Micaela Christensen, who had a base hit in the inning. Nyleen Cook also had a hit in the fourth inning for Los Alamos.
Los Alamos finished with just four hits in the game, however. Yvette Padilla singled in the fifth inning and was driven in by Radosevich’s triple to score the Hilltoppers’ third run.
On the slab, Monika Teter took the loss despite giving up just two earned runs until the seventh, both of those earned runs coming in the first inning. She struck out 10 batters in the contest.
The Hilltoppers will host the Los Alamos Invitational this weekend. That tournament starts Friday.
