After Thursday’s play concluded, all of the top teams in the Class 4A softball playoffs were still alive in the championship bracket.
The Class 4A playoffs continue through Saturday. The championship game will be played at Lobo Field in Albuquerque.
Following the Del Norte Knights’ upset of the Los Alamos Hilltoppers Thursday morning, they were thumped by the top-seeded Piedra Vista Panthers. The Panthers, quite possibly the best team in the state of New Mexico, romped to a 15-0 victory in Thursday’s second round.
The Panthers are scheduled to play the fourth-seeded Los Lunas Tigers in the championship round Friday morning.
Del Norte, which is scheduled to play St. Pius X Friday, was the ninth-seeded team in the playoffs, while Los Alamos was the eighth seed.
Following the opening round of the 2011 state tournament, the remaining teams go into double-elimination play.
The Bernalillo Spartans, the only other team selected from District 2-4A this season, pulled off the only other upset in Thursday’s first round. Bernalillo, the No. 11 seed, tripped up No. 6 Aztec 11-10 in the opening round.
In Thursday’s second round, however, Bernalillo lost to third-seeded Farmington. Bernalillo’s first opponent in the elimination bracket was seventh-seeded Bloomfield.
