The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team is poised to make a clean sweep in District 2AAAA.
Los Alamos topped district opponent Española Valley on the road Wednesday. Los Alamos scored three runs in the third inning to take control of its contest against Española Valley’s Sundevils and cruised to a 7-3 victory.
Wednesday’s win was the 13th in a row for the Hilltoppers (16-7 overall, 10-0 in 2AAAA) heading into what could be an important game for seeding purposes. The Hilltoppers were scheduled to play at Moriarty today.
In this week’s Class AAAA softball poll, conducted by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association, Moriarty’s Pintos (17-3 overall, 6-1 in District 5AAAA) are ranked eighth, while the Hilltoppers are 10th in that same poll.
The Hilltoppers clinched the 2AAAA title and a berth in the AAAA state tournament Saturday with their doubleheader sweep of Bernalillo on the road. The AAAA playoff brackets will be released early next week.
Wednesday, Los Alamos pitcher Stephanie Abney had one of the best days of her career.
Not only did Abney, a senior, throw six innings to pick up the victory, she also belted three doubles, going 3-for-4 at the plate and driving in three runs.
On the slab, Abney allowed just three hits and struck out nine batters. Monika Teter came in to close out the game in the seventh inning.
Los Alamos scored twice in the first inning, with Abney driving in Brianna Radosevich and Sam D’Anna driving in Mariah Zerr, Abney’s pinch runner, to go up 2-0.
Meanwhile, Hilltopper catcher Micaela Christensen hit her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to open up the top of the fifth. Christensen, who is hitting .517 on the year, went 2-for-3 Wednesday and scored three times.
For Española Valley, lead-off hitter Renee Roybal homered twice in the contest, the first a two-run shot in the third to keep the Sundevils (14-8 overall, 6-4 in 2AAAA) in the game.
