The Los Alamos Hilltopper junior varsity softball team finished second in its home tournament last weekend.
Los Alamos won four games during the two-day tournament, held at Overlook Park in White Rock. Los Alamos topped St. Michael’s 11-3, Taos 13-0, Santa Fe 13-2 and Belen 15-3.
The Hilltoppers finished second to the one tournament team it didn’t play, Raton. Raton also won four games and earned the tiebreaker of runs scored, 55-52.
Against St. Michael’s, Dancy Smith picked up the win on the slab, while Alyessa Mojica closed out the game.
Vanessa Martinez and Emillee Jones combined for nine strikeouts in Los Alamos win over Taos. Martinez aided her own cause with a two-run triple in the game, while Jones had a bases-clearing double in the fourth. Kianna Zerr came just a triple short of hitting for the cycle.
Against Santa Fe, Jones picked up the victory, working with Jordan Hammock at catcher, who was replacing Aletta Marciano. Marciano had four hits Friday.
Zerr went the distance in the Hilltoppers’ final game against Belen, aided by a solid defensive effort.
Mojica had a two-run triple in the first inning and was driven in by Toni Batha to get the offense going.
Although Los Alamos didn’t get a chance to play Raton at the tournament, the two teams will play Saturday in Raton.
