The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team fell in the opener of the St. Pius X Invitational Thursday. In its last at-bat, Los Alamos rallied, cutting a four-run lead down to one, but couldn't get the tying run across in a 4-3 loss to Santa Fe Thursday.Ashley Merhege allowed just five hits and three earned runs for Los Alamos Thursday, walking none and striking out two, but other than a base hit from Briana Radosevich that brought in two runs — Shelby Courtright and Samantha Aumack scored on the hit, Megan Burditt scored on a throwing error during the same play — the Hilltoppers had a relatively quiet outing offensively.Los Alamos was held to six hits in the seven innings, all of them singles. Burditt was the only Hilltopper with more than one hit in the contest.Despite the loss, which dropped Los Alamos to 1-4 on the season, skipper Randy Burditt said he's happy with the way his team has been playing."The kids are learning every step of the way," he said. "Every game, we're getting better."The 'Toppers were scheduled to take on Bernalillo's Spartans, whom they beat at a tournament in Farmington last weekend, in the consolation round of the tournament. The St. Pius Invitational continues through Saturday.
