The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team couldn’t come back from an early deficit and fell to the Raton Tigers 8-1 Saturday on the road.
Los Alamos fell behind 3-0 after three innings, committing two costly errors in the first inning that led to two Raton runs. Raton then scored three times in the fifth and tacked on two more in the sixth to go up 8-0. Los Alamos scored in the final inning but couldn’t muster anything further.
The Tigers, the No. 2 team in Class 3A according to the latest coaches’ poll, held the Hilltoppers to just six hits and played a clean defensive game, making the going tough.
“We had a couple of errors in that first inning the helped them get the two runs,” Los Alamos manager Roger Anaya said. “Going up 2-0, that put the pressure back on us. We had runners in scoring position, but we had some baserunning errors…we sometimes took ourselves out of runs that we could’ve scored early.”
Saturday’s loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Hilltoppers (5-9), who will now head into the start of District 2-4A play. They will take on Española Valley at home Wednesday.
Los Alamos is the defending district champion.
