The Los Alamos softball team was nipped at Sue Cleveland High School Thursday.
Cleveland, a Class 5A school in Rio Rancho, pushed two runs across in the sixth inning, coming back from a 1-run deficit to win 5-4.
Los Alamos (1-5) scored runs in both the fourth and fifth innings Thursday to claim a 4-3 lead, while the team’s ace, Monika Teter, held Cleveland’s Storm scoreless during the middle innings.
However, the Storm (2-0) strung together a pair of hits, a walk and a sacrifice bunt off Teter for its sixth-inning runs to pick up the win.
“We played well against a very good Cleveland team,” Los Alamos manager Roger Anaya said. “Our hitting and defense continues to improve. We need to work on getting the timely hitting.”
In the game, Los Alamos had six hits but stranded 10 runners on base.
The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after half an inning. Lead-off hitter Lexi Mang reached on an error in the Cleveland outfield and would score later on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Emily Lucero bunted home Micaela Christensen, who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Cleveland would score a run in the home half of the first and two more in the second, but Teter, who finished the game with six strikeouts, kept Cleveland off-balance for the next three innings.
