Softball closes out season at Capital

-A A +A

The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team will finish up its regular season today coming off a doubleheader sweep Saturday in the valley.
The Hilltoppers close out their 2013 season at Capital. Capital has been no match for any of the other district teams, being outscored 117-23 in nine ballgames.
On the District 2-4A season, Los Alamos (13-11 overall, 9-2 in 2-4A) has played well, but despite dropping just two games heading into today’s contest, it doesn’t appear the team has any shot at the 2-4A crown.
Technically, the district race isn’t over. Bernalillo (17-1-1 overall, 8-1 in 2-4A) hasn’t locked up the district title yet. It would still need wins in two of its last three ballgames.
Bernalillo plays Santa Fe today and Española Valley in a season-ending doubleheader Saturday. Unfortunately for the Hilltoppers, Bernalillo had little trouble vanquishing either of those opponents in their contests earlier this month, outscoring them by a combined 34-2 in three contests.
Bernalillo holds the tiebreaker over Los Alamos, winning the 2-4A opener against the Hilltoppers in Bernalillo earlier this month, then splitting with the Hilltoppers April 20 in White Rock.
Saturday, Los Alamos completed a season sweep over Española Valley, thumping the Sundevils 14-2 in game one and earning a 9-7 victory in the nightcap.
The Hilltoppers held the Sundevils (8-13, 6-7) to just five hits in the opening game and scored six runs in the third, followed by four runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to close the contest out in five innings.
In the second game, Los Alamos scored seven times in the first inning. Española Valley was held scoreless until the fifth, then rallied in the bottom of the seventh for five runs to make the Hilltoppers sweat out the victory.
While Los Alamos will likely have to be content with a runner-up finish this season, it seems likely the team will make the playoffs.
The Hilltoppers have the 12th-best winning percentage among Class 4A teams despite playing a tougher-than-average schedule and are 12th in the latest 4A MaxPreps power rankings.
The state softball postseason brackets will be released Sunday. The first round of the playoffs starts May 10.
