The Los Alamos High School athletic department announced Friday morning the hiring of Roger Anaya to take over the school’s softball program.

Anaya and three other candidates were interviewed Wednesday. The hiring committee selected Anaya Friday morning.

His first official day of work is Aug. 11.

Anaya’s selection is the first of three coaching vacancies that will be filled at LAHS. Candidates for the girls basketball job will be interviewed Tuesday.

“I’m glad we have one of these taken care of,” athletic director Vicki Nelms said. “I feel really good about the way the interviews went…and I feel good about what he (Anaya) is going to bring to the program.”

LAHS had originally scheduled to interview four candidates for the softball job, but one of the candidates ultimately dropped out.

Shortly after the conclusion of the 2008 season, former Los Alamos manager Randy Burditt retired after eight years with the program. He cited family reasons for leaving, not the least of which was being able to see his daughter, Megan, who graduated this year, play collegiate softball at Western Nebraska.
