Soccer: LA teams head to Albuquerque Academy Invite

-A A +A

Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls soccer teams will head to one of the toughest regular season tournaments in the state Thursday.

The Hilltopper boys and girls will open the 2010 Albuquerque Academy Invitational Thursday afternoon. Los Alamos' girls will take on new Class 5A entry Sue Cleveland High School at 2:30 p.m. while Los Alamos' boys will have a rematch with Rio Rancho at 4:30 p.m.

The Academy Invitational continues through Saturday.

Academy, one of the premier soccer programs in the state, usually invites some of the state's top teams to participate. Sandia Prep and Hope Christian are among the top soccer schools in the state, while Cleveland, located in Rio Rancho, is already a well-respected girls soccer program.

Cleveland was ranked second in last week's NMSoccer.com's Class 5A girls soccer poll behind only Sandia. It has posted wins this season over Hope, Oñate and Carlsbad and has lost just one contest so far, that coming at Mayfield.

The Hilltopper girls have lost their last two contests, including a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Rio Rancho Sept. 2. The Hilltoppers opened the season with two big shutout victories but have scored just once in the two recent losses.

On the boys' side, Los Alamos and Rio Rancho played a wild game in the opener for both schools. Los Alamos went up 2-0 in the second half, but Rio Rancho closed out regulation with a pair of unanswered goals to force a shootout.

In the shootout, Hilltopper goalkeeper Lorenzo Venneri blocked a pair of penalty kicks to lead Los Alamos to the shootout victory.
