Maneesha Chitanvis of Los Alamos earned the top player’s honor for girls Class AAAA soccer this season.

Chitanvis, a senior for the Hilltoppers’ squad that advanced to the Class AAAA championship game, was named the Class AAAA Player of the Year for 2008.

Along with being one of two Los Alamos players named to the AAAA first team All-State squad, Chitanvis was the top scorer in the state this season, garnering 29 goals (first in the state) and 20 assists (second in the state) for 78 total points, nine total points better than her nearest competitor, Rachel Montoya of St. Pius X.

Laura Nelson, who had an outstanding regular season and playoffs, was also named to the girls first team as a fullback.

On the boys side, Will Schoonover and Jason Reagor were named the AAAA first team from Los Alamos.

Reagor led Los Alamos in scoring with 47 total points, and his 17 assists placed him second overall in Class AAAA. Schoonover was named an All-State fullback.

The Hilltoppers advanced to the state Class AAAA semifinals before falling to Albuquerque Academy.

In all, Los Alamos’ boys placed five players on the first or second squads — Michael Leslie, Andy Thoma and Dion Obermeyer were named to the second team — and four Hilltopper boys — Adam Nekimken, David Bjorklund, Jon Thoma and Davis Anson — were given Honorable Mention nods.

For the Hilltopper girls, Jenny Tumas was named to the AAAA second team as a goalkeeper, Keyla Tumas and Heather Walters were named second team midfielders, Sayako Shimada was named second team forward. Another three Hilltopper girls — Shaina Riciputi, Kelsey Neal and Alsi Unal — were named to the Honorable Mention squad.

In the Class AAAA playoffs, Chitanvis did some of her best work of the season, scoring or assisting on seven of Los Alamos’ eight postseason goals.

State champion Albuquerque Academy led with four first team selections on the girls side, while St. Pius, which won the boys AAAA state title, picked up five first team slots. Ryan Blair was named the boys AAAA Player of the Year.

Picking up Coach of the Year honors were Mike Strati of St. Pius for the AAAA boys and Samantha Lucero of Volcano Vista for the Class AAAA girls.
