State and local Democratic candidates turned out in force for Thursday’s combined Precinct Ward and County Convention hosted by the Democratic Party of Los Alamos County.
Gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Diane Denish topped the list followed by all five candidates running for the vacancy she is leaving as she term limits out at year’s end.
“I like to say there are so many candidates running for lieutenant governor because I made it look like so much fun,” Denish told the crowd of some 50 local Democrats, 19 candidates and three candidate representatives, gathered at the Los Alamos Golf Course.
Each candidate was given four minutes to speak before the local Democrats broke into wards to elect their delegates to the state convention set for March 13 at Buffalo Thunder.
Denish asked for their support, joking that while she is the sole Democrat running for governor, “there are five Republicans ganging up on me.”
Local resident Debbie Gill announced her bid for a seat on the Los Alamos County Council. There are four council seats up for election this year. Gill joins two GOP candidates, incumbent Ralph Phelps and former councilor Geoff Rodgers in the race.
“Debbie’s an excellent candidate and I think she’ll do an excellent job,” Local Chair Cathy Chapman said. “I’m very pleased with (Thursday’s) turnout and I’m hoping we got the message out that we have very good candidates but we still need more because there are more spots to fill.”
Los Alamos County has 23 Democratic delegates allocated from Congressional District 3 to attend the State Pre-primary Convention.
The party elected 18 local delegates at Thursday evening’s event to join the five Los Alamos State Central Committee members who will be attending the state convention.
Central Committee members include Chapman, local party Vice Chair Carl Newton, Laura McClellan, Naishing Key and Eric Vasquez.
Delegates include Carlotta McInteer, Nathan Hjelm, Randy Roberts, Tom King, Jr., Catherine Herbison-Wiget, Gary and Marilyn Doolen, Greg Kendall, Catherine Plesko, Helen Deaven, Jeff Carmichael, Ron Moses, Sarah Buehrer, Paul Frederickson, Dale and Marianne Anaya, Steve Turpin, Nona Girardi, Ken Milder, Pete Sheehey, Mike and Kyle Wheeler and Betty Ann Gunther.
