A key advisory board will consider a petition for extending coverage of nuclear workers at Los Alamos National Laboratory who became ill from cancer or other diseases under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA).

The meeting of the Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health meets in Albuquerque, beginning Tuesday at the Doubletree Hotel, 201 Marquette Ave., Northwest. The meeting starts at 1 p.m., but the LANL petition is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. There are three days of meetings altogether, but the LANL portion is scheduled for a hearing on the first day.

The board has set aside public comment periods beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 7 p.m. Wednesday. Also, for those unable to attend in person, there will be a toll free teleconference number, 866-650-0537, with the participant code number 9933701

The petition related to LANL is on behalf of al support service personnel who worked at LANL for at least 250 days from Jan. 2, 1976 to Dec. 31, 2005, effectively extending a “special exposure cohort” status to employees for an additional 20 years beyond the current coverage.

EEOICPA is a complex compensation program for Department of Energy employees who qualify to make claims.

A representative of the Nuclear Worker Advocacy Office (505) 827-1636) in the New Mexico Environment Department is available to provide additional information and to assist workers with their claims.
